Enacted February 23, 2006 The Old Town Residents' Association (OTRA) represents approximately 520 households in Takoma Park, Maryland. OTRA's neighborhood is immediately adjacent to the Takoma Metro property slated for development by EYA. OTRA members and our neighborhood are concerned parties in the development process. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is sponsoring a community planning session for the Takoma Metrorail station joint development site and and Compact public Hearing on the joint development project at the station. The authors of three alternative designs for the station site presented their design ideas to OTRA on February 23, 2006. OTRA voted at that meeting to express that: OTRA opposes current WMATA-EYA development plans, which lack regard for transit and community concerns and significantly do not comply with the Takoma Central District Plan and Takoma Transportation Study. OTRA would happily support any of the three alternative design visions presented to us or a variant created by the greater community that respects certain features, namely that any Takoma Metrorail station development -- - Prioritize current and anticipated future transit needs. - Devote significant space to retail. - Favor mixed-use development concentrated on a portion of the site. - Maximize retention of public open space and tree cover. - Integrate with the surrounding neighborhoods. OTRA further supports the District of Columbia's advocacy of creation of a western entrance to the Metrorail station.
